The number of new applicants for unemployment benefits was 884,000 in the week ending September 5, seasonally adjusted, according to the Labor Department. This was unchanged from the previous week’s revised level.
The previous week’s level was revised up by 3,000 from 881,000 to 884,000. The 4- week moving average was 970,750, a decrease of 21,750 from the previous week’s revised average.
Without seasonal adjustment, the numbers look worse:
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 857,148 in the week ending September 5, an increase of 20,140 (or 2.4 percent) from the previous week.
For perspective, there were just 160,342 initial claims in the comparable week in 2019.
